James W. Wheless, BScPharm, MD, FAAP, FACP, FAAN, FAES, FCNS

Dr. James W. Wheless is Professor and Chief of Pediatric Neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He also serves as Director of both the Neuroscience Institute and Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program and as Co-Director of the Tuberous Sclerosis Center of Excellence at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. He earned his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma, where he also completed an internship and residency in pediatrics. He then completed a fellowship in child neurology at Lurie Children’s Hospital and an additional fellowship in EEG/epilepsy at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Wheless specializes in childhood convulsive disorders, and his research is focused on pediatric anti-epileptic drug development, the ketogenic diet, epilepsy surgery, device therapy, and non-invasive functional brain mapping. He has authored or co-authored 4 textbooks on epilepsy; and over 1000 publications, including manuscripts published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Neurology, Annals of Neurology, Epilepsia, Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, and Neurology Clinical Practice.
