This educational activity is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of a financial assistance award totaling $1.5 million with 100% funded by the CDC and HHS. The contents are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of nor an endorsement by CDC, HHS or the U.S. government. About 3.4 million people in the United States live with active epilepsy. Epilepsy is a complex spectrum of disorders characterized by recurrent seizures. Seizures are not the only challenge that people with epilepsy face as they are often confronted with complex medication regimens, lifestyle adjustments, comorbid disease, disability, under or unemployment, limited access to transportation, and stigma. Even when seizures are well controlled, challenges often persist throughout the course of the disease leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and a decreased quality of life. Each individual impacted by epilepsy presents a complex set of medical and psychosocial issues for medical providers to manage in the clinical setting and for patients to self-manage in their homes and diverse communities. At the conclusion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to Describe the role of social determinants of health in epilepsy Discuss how disparities and bias impact health access and outcomes for people with epilepsy and list factors underlying access, treatment, and resource disparities in epilepsy. This module includes seven individual videos that focus on social determinants of health in epilepsy. The content is provided by an interdisciplinary faculty and was originally presented at the American Epilepsy Society Annual Meeting in December 2022. The full course is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and includes a pre-test and a post-test to evaluate the knowledge gained as a result of this course. Faculty disclosures are provided at the beginning of each module.
