This webinar on rural health epilepsy care emphasized that geography should not determine access to diagnosis, treatment, or outcomes. Dr. Yardi Andres explained that rural patients face major barriers: fewer neurologists and epileptologists, limited EEG and imaging access, longer travel distances, medication access problems, and fewer surgical evaluations. These disparities often lead to delayed diagnosis, more seizures before treatment, increased emergency presentations, longer hospital stays, and higher mortality. Rural and disadvantaged patients are also less likely to receive epilepsy surgery, even though outcomes after surgery can be comparable once care is obtained.<br /><br />The talk highlighted solutions already helping reduce these gaps. Telemedicine lowers missed appointments and is especially valued by patients living farther from specialty centers. Home video, home medication delivery, ambulatory EEG, and point-of-care EEG can also improve access. Emerging AI tools may support diagnosis, interpretation of EEG and MRI, and patient selection for surgery, while future models should better account for social and geographic barriers. Dr. Andres also described an Epilepsy Disadvantage Index to identify underserved communities and target resources more effectively.
