Video Summary
The webinar introduced how social determinants of health shape epilepsy diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. Dr. Annie Reyes reviewed five key domains: economic stability, education, health care access, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context. Evidence linked disadvantage, inadequate insurance, low income, rural residence, and limited education with barriers to specialist care, diagnostic testing, effective treatment, and epilepsy surgery. These factors also relate to seizure burden, cognitive and mental health challenges, quality of life, medication adherence, and SUDEP risk.

Caregiver advocates Gaby Conacher and Amanda Mitchell described how these challenges can compound across a person’s life and affect the entire family. They emphasized the importance of timely diagnosis, practical support, and being heard and believed by providers.

Although social needs are common, screening and follow-up remain inconsistent, and some patients do not know where to seek help. Dr. Reyes called for coordinated care that connects patients and families with clinical, mental health, and community resources. She also highlighted existing self-management programs, including SMART, HOBSCOTCH, and Project UPLIFT. The webinar concluded that comprehensive epilepsy care must address more than seizures and invited participants to explore practical solutions in a follow-up session.
